5 Key Aspects of Becoming an IAS Officer

Becoming an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) Officer is the most cherished dream of every Indian student. The perquisites and facilities associated with the prestigious government position make these jobs popular among the graduates. If you are aspiring to be an IAS officer, you have to clear the civil services examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The applicants are required to submit eleven essays and papers during a course on one year. However, most of the successful applicants have appeared multiple times for the civil service examination to achieve a much higher score required to become an IAS officer.

Eligibility Criteria:

Before preparing for the IAS examination you need to understand the eligibility requirements. For applying for the civil services examination, the candidate must be an Indian citizen, his age should not be less than 21 years and above 30 years, and he needs to possess a college degree in any discipline. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for the IAS preliminary examination by collecting the application from the local post office. The completed application form has to reach the UPSC address before a specific date. After receiving your application form, UPSC will send you an approval letter mentioning the center and date of the IAS preliminary examination.

Preliminary Examination:

The preliminary IAS examination consist of a writing a general studies paper along with an optional subject paper. You have to answer questions related to politics, budgeting, developmental and other government programs as part of the general studies paper. On the other hand, the candidates are allows to choose a topic of their personal choice and interest as part of the optional subject paper. If you successfully clear the civil services preliminary examination, UPSC will approve you to move on to the main civil services examination. However, the candidates failed to clear the preliminary examination can appear next year for the IAS examination.

Main Examination:

The main civil service examination consists of nine papers. A candidate has to submit one essay for each individual topic like Indian language, English language and general studies. Further, the candidate has to submit two papers on general studies and four papers on optional subjects of his choice. Normally, the general studies papers will cover the same topics covered as part of the preliminary examinations. Once you successfully clear the main civil service examination, you will be invited for the final interview. But the candidates failing to clear this section of the examinations have to start over again next year.

Final Interview:

UPSC selects a panel of representatives to take final interview of the candidates who have cleared the main section of the civil service examination. The representatives evaluate the candidate in detailed and thorough manner based on his personality, level of confidence and knowledge of national and international affairs. After cracking the interview successfully, you can become an IAS officer and become an integral part of the Indian government system.
