By Rajnish Mehan
The very purpose of pursuing a management course, for most of the candidates, is to gain an upper hand in their place of work. When the students after passing from graduation go for these courses, they are hopeful of getting a better pay-scale and a good post, which can boost their future career. Professionals who are already in a job are going for management courses in order to improve their current positions. On the whole, a strong undercurrent flows among the people that a management degree is a must in these days. To achieve this aim, some go for the full time classroom courses in various universities and institutes. On the other hand, some people who are already in a job try and get into the executive MBA courses. Such a course is designed to provide a degree holder to secure promotions, better management responsibilities, career improvement and betterment in life in every aspect. The executive MBA or EMBA is used as an effective tool for bringing the ambitious career plans into reality. Given the prospects the executive MBA has in the present world scenario, it becomes essential for the interested candidates to select their institutes or universities in a prudent manner. Some important pointers that are needed to be concentrated upon are: Brand effect of the institute – Whenever people are planning to go for the EMBA, it is important that they enquire about the brand value of this particular program. A question that needs to be asked is about the faculty members and their achievement. People who have had adequate exposure in the industries would be able to better impart their experiences in form of practical training. Also, the extent of popularity of the said executive MBA is to be analysed, before jumping headlong into this particular topic. Along with this, the exchange programs should be sought because this is quite important to help in having a broader outlook. If possible, people should seek the alumni from such programs in the given college and take a look at their placements. Is the expectation matching the experience? Most of the executive MBA programs are of the same type, without much to differentiate between them. Students need to look for the value addition due to these courses. Some aspects that need to be looked to allow managerial skills to be developed are decision making abilities, personal development skills, negotiation ability, and team management. These are the experiences that would matter in the end. People after passing the EMBA program will be able to work on their own and can contribute with their knowledge and skill for the improvement of a company’s profile. Industry exposure should be a part of the curriculum for some period of time. In order to improvise upon their learning and to make the better of their MBA education, students are required to interact with senior students and those who have already passed out. By this, the current students will be able to know about the different possibilities that they have after passing out. One more important factor that has been instrumental in creating a name for any executive MBA program is that of the blending of theory and practice. There should be competition among the people of the same batch. This will help in sharing of ideas and bringing out the confidence in handling various situations. New ideas can be shared and shortcomings can be discussed. If the colleagues or fellow students are from different industry backgrounds, it will be an obvious benefit for the students as they can know about the different experiences of various industries. In order to make the most of the opportunity of executive MBA, students should be able to make a prudent choice of the institute where they would be doing their EMBA. The future is dependent on this to a large extent, and therefore, it is mandatory to take a decision with sufficient information.
