How Difficult Or Easy Is The Preparation For GATE? A Perspective

By Rajnish Mehan

Almost every student of engineering is aware that GATE is the ultimate stopover for higher education in engineering in India. The popularity of this particular exam is such that every engineering student, at some point of time must have thought of appearing in this exam. But, not many are able to muster the courage to bring them to appear in the final exam. Not only is the toughness of the exam a deterrent, but the final marking is published as a percentile.

Concept of percentile in GATE means that the person who has the maximum number of correct answers will be ranked as the topper with the highest percentile. Others are ranked below the topper in terms of percentile. And the marks which people receive and utilise in applying to different universities are based on the percentile that they receive.

If a person is expecting a high rank because he or she has scored many answers correctly, then also, the chances of getting a high percentile might be less. This will occur when others have also scored the same number of answers or more. The method of ranking through percentile is found in CAT exam for management admissions, apart from the GATE, and that exam is also quite sought after.

Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering or GATE as it is called, is conducted by the IITs and IISc for admissions into various post graduate or masters courses in the different branches of engineering. Students, who qualify in the exam, can have the choice to pick the branches and the colleges. Hence, getting a higher ranking allows the students to secure a seat in their choicest subjects and colleges. But, looking at the standard of questions which are formed by the best faculties of these institutes and the score in percentile, the achieving of the ranks is not only difficult but also very competitive. In order to get through the ranks, the students will have to follow a few basic principles in their study preparations.

• Solve previous years’ questions – This is one of the best methods to have a feel and grasp over the types of questions that are asked in GATE. Since the exam pattern has become mostly objective, it is important for the aspiring candidates to work through these questions, so that they are able to develop a bit of confidence. Solving these question papers also gives the students the perspective on their strong and weak areas. During the course of answering the questions, they can also keep a tab on the timing. This is important because people should know about leaving the questions which are difficult or not getting solved. This will enable the students to attempt the maximum numbers of questions, and not leave out those which could have been easier to solve.

• Analysing the test papers after taking them in a simulating environment of time and circumstances is considered as a very productive manner. When the students sit down and discuss the questions and the manner in which they solved them during the mock tests, it helps them identify the weaknesses.

• Before the final exam of GATE, students need to appear in mock tests conducted by many coaching institutes. They should preferable select the ones which are conducted on a national level and gives out rankings and percentile scores. It gives them an understanding of where they stand in the test and their preparations.

GATE is one of the toughest but the best ways to pursue higher education in technology subjects. Studying in the IITs and IISc is a matter of pride and also an assurance that the future is bright. More than anything else, the students are satisfied that they have achieved something, which only a few elite in the whole country are able to do.
