IITJEE: The D Day Matters A Lot For Students

By Rajnish Mehan

The common thread that binds all the students, aiming for admissions into Indian Institutes of Technology in India by appearing in the IIT JEE, is that of the anticipatory fear. The stomach is churning and the mind sees nothing. There is a virtual blank out for most of the students. The anticipation is so high that many people tend to falter on the exam table, thereby destroying their chances of making it through.

Hundreds of thousands of students appear every year in the IIT JEE exams which are conducted at various centres throughout the country. Since its beginning in the year 1960, the exam has tested the ability of the students to answer questions in physics, chemistry and mathematics and the questions every year have been unique and innovative. Students with the best grasp of these subjects and with a high level of intelligence have made it through the entrance exams.

But, there are certain other factors which also become responsible for helping the students crack the entrance. These are the features which are associated with the performance on the day of exam and in the 2 hours’ duration.
This is also the experience of most of the IITians who went through the rigorous exam pattern to come out successful in the test.

- Reading each of the questions in the paper is extremely important. Since the questions are of the highest standard and there are new formats of the questions every year, the first thing that the students should do is to understand the questions. These are problem based questions where the students need to understand what the question is aiming at.

- After reading and understanding of the question, the next thing that the students should do is to go through the different answer choices. This being the toughest exam in engineering, there is every possibility that the answer choices might be all appearing correct. This is given to confuse the examinee so that the most appropriate answer is selected. In order to get to the right answer, the principle of exclusion is brought in. The best answer should be ideally selected on the basis of the wrong choices.

- Since the students are required to mark the right choice for a question, with a pencil in the OMR answer sheet, it is to be done carefully. They should better answer each question individually and immediately. Keeping the answers to be marked at one go, in the later part of the exam, will bring in the possibility of marking the answers wrongly. One wrong circle and this will result in wrong choice selection in the subsequent answers.

- Time management is something that is never possible to be mastered even by those who have practised mock test papers. But one principle that the students should keep in mind is that of leaving a question if the answer is not reached in the first attempt. They shouldn’t keep on trying to reach the answer because it will lead to the failure to attempt other questions. This particular feature is the most overlooked in solving competitive exams like IIT JEE because the lure to get to the answer is very high because people feel that they can do it.

People should always try and get the maximum number of questions attempted because they do not know which question is easy and possible to be solved. These mistakes have proven time and again to be quite costly because all the year’s efforts are lost and people now will have to wait for another year to score the IIT JEE. These are simple carefulness which is required to be observed by the students. In order to be successful, it doesn’t take a lot of trouble, but maintaining simple things will suffice towards a seat in one of the IITs.
