Is Part Time MBA The Way To Go Or Is It Like Any Other MBA Course?
By Rajnish Mehan
For the students of India, a lot of management courses are being offered by the plethora of B schools in the country. After graduation, a lot many students are inclined towards going for the management education. They have the opinion that the management degrees would grant them an advantage over their peers in terms of placements and more importantly in terms of finances. This concept remaining in the minds of thousands of people, it becomes obvious that they want to get into MBA admissions in different colleges. Among the different types of MBA that are in provision, one type which has attracted the attention of many working professionals is that of the part time MBA. But, the irony of the situation is that very few people are actually aware about what this particular type of management course is. The next thing they seem to do is compare this with the full time MBA course because for most people the full time course is the end all of management studies. It is no surprise that everyone is wishing these days to secure a seat in the management institutes for the full time two year course. To justify that the part time MBA is beneficial, people need to be enlightened about this course vis-a-vis the full time studies. 1. Equal duration of course – The part time course extends for a period of 3 years under some MBA college. This is almost equal to the full time course, or rather more than it because students study in the campus for 2 years in a full time classroom MBA course. 2. Incumbent students – In the MBA which is part-time, the students enrolled have working experience in different industries. These students have worked in different industries and have enrolled themselves in the course during which they will be able to study in a particular aspect of management, which is relevant to their industry. 3. Two way learning – This is perhaps the most important aspect of a part time MBA because of the industry related working executives. People with varied experiences join these courses and sit together, interact and learn from each other. They have huge amounts of practical experience backing them and some of them also have been places quite high with great responsibilities. It is then obvious that they have a lot of knowledge about their respective fields. When they sit in the class, it helps them in learning from each other’s experience. Additionally, the teachers are also able to learn from their experiences and industry oriented knowledge. Part time MBA is more of an interactive session rather than a class with lectures. 4. Financial benefits – It is a common idea among the MBA aspirants that they will get a great pay package if they pass out from reputed B schools in India. But, not everyone is able to make it through the entrance exams of CAT or get a good score to enter into the top 20 B schools of India. In such a case, they will have to settle down for the B rung business schools, so that their two years wouldn’t be highly productive. The point which people forget is that the industry exposure and work experience helps in making people command a better salary. With a good number of years in the practical field and equipped with a part time MBA will help the students get a better pay than those students who have finished their regular MBA. There are plenty of such factors including the above, which are a pointer towards the superiority of the part time MBA. Students should therefore bring a change of opinion in their minds and try to gain experience in any job and then approach the part time MBA for a fruitful career in the future.
