MHT CET Popularity On The Rise: What Do Statistics Say About The Trends?
By Rajnish Mehan
Students from different parts of the state of Maharashtra, who are hopeful of a seat in an engineering or medical college prefer going for the MHT CET. The Maharashtra health and technology common entrance test is conducted every year for selecting students to join the medical streams, engineering courses and pharmacy in the respective government and private medical colleges of the state. This particular exam has been going on since many years and is a good means for the students as they can appear in one exam and take admissions in any stream they want. Every year, the number of students keeps on rising. They are hopeful of getting a good rank and take admissions in the engineering, medical or pharmacy colleges of the state. • In the last exam in 2011, the total number of 45,541 students put their forms for medical college admissions and 1.49 lakhs for both biology and mathematics exams, which was about 16,053 more than the previous year. • But, the trend shows that there was a drop of 2.47% of eligible students from the previous year. • In the mathematics stream only, the total number of applicants was 1.07 lakhs. • From the data it is clear that the total number of students appearing in mathematics stream and interested for engineering admissions are more than those aspiring for medical seats. Such a concept has been seen as a norm in MHT CET. This is because of the reasons that the medical subjects are a bit tough and getting into government medical colleges is tougher. Also, the reason that the private medical colleges have much higher fees for the entire course than it is for the private engineering colleges, counts towards the lower number of aspirants for medical seats. • Engineering seats are many while the medical and pharmacy seat together form a very small proportion of the total seat. • When on one hand, a total of 1 lakh engineering seats can be found in the whole of the state of Maharashtra, there are only 7000 medical seats and 9000 pharmacy seats, which are to be filled up through the MHT CET. • The overall pass percentage in all the exams have dropped. From the total of 1.76 lakhs students who appeared in the test in 2010, only 26,905 students cleared the pass mark limit, and this amounted to 15.23%. But in 2011, the total number of students appearing in the MHT CET was 1.92 lakhs but the pass number was 23,147 which are therefore less than the previous year. • In the year 2011, the total number of medical aspirants was quite high, higher than any of the previous 6 years. The figures were compiled from various newspapers after the year 2011, which showed the trend of entrance exam takers for the seats in medical, engineering and pharmacy colleges of Maharashtra. This data showed an overall change in the qualifying students’ pass marks and also showed that despite the increasing cost of study, the number of students appearing in the entrance exam is increasing. In Maharashtra, the MHT CET is a popular test and is being appeared by many students because it helps them secure a seat in one of these subjects in the state in the largest number, than any other national level test.
