Why Are Engineering Colleges In India Cropping Up Helter Skelter, And Is It Justified?
By Rajnish Mehan
When someone made a wisecrack that in some years time, every alternate building would be an engineering colleges, few would have realised the significance of the statement. It is known to everyone in India that the engineering college scenario was not as it is a couple of decades back. Past scenario: There were a few government colleges, where the students securing top ranks in the entrance exams were taking admissions. The best thing was that people knew about these few colleges and were also able to mark its location. Some states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, etc were having more number of colleges than the other states and there were only a couple of government engineering colleges. But, then came the time of globalisation. Gates of Indian economy were opened for the foreign players and many Indian companies also flourished with élan. Few companies went global, keeping the major part of their operations in India though. Genesis of jobs: At a time during this, there were plenty of job requirements and vacancies. And most of these vacancies were in the category of engineers and technical people while the management trainee requirements were also high. This phase saw a serious requirement of engineering graduates who were hired with handsome salaries and in quick numbers. This splurge gave way to the vision of more requirements of engineering graduates in the coming years and then the engineering colleges in India started to be established. Later day scenario: In all these years, the frenzy of foreign players coming into India has gone down, but the thing that doesn’t seem to get over is the establishment of engineering colleges. It was also during this time that the students after passing from the 12th standard went for the engineering studies because they couldn’t resist the fact that after passing out they also would be employed in multinational companies with fat packets of money. So, students as well as parents wanted the admissions in the engineering colleges. Then a new cycle of admissions was kickstarted with private engineering colleges luring the students with a show of their campus placements and big banner ads. Current going-ons: The current rate at which industrial growth and economical improvement is being seen in the country, is an indicator of the high requirement. But, the real deal is in producing talented students with well balanced technical knowledge. Such colleges, which aim at the wholesome growth of the students and the betterment of their knowledge, are very much required in the country. But the various engineering institutes that are coming up fail to produce talents and instead are churning out graduates. As long as on job training is adequate, such technical knowledge deficiency will not surface. But the moment the selection and recruitment into jobs will be based on the technical knowledge, plenty of students will be at the back benches. Then, there cannot be any justification of the opening of engineering colleges in India. Conclusion: The present day scenario doesn’t demean the opening of new engineering institutes but stresses upon improvement of the quality of education and contribution towards the country as a whole, where innovations and research based teachings are followed. The students who are passing out from graduation degrees should be provided with enough practical knowledge so that they can increase the productivity of the organisation where they get recruited. Since, the companies are also realising this fact and recruiting people based on such a criterion, the future of the engineering colleges in India is perhaps on the path of improvisation.
